Komplex Kapharnaüm

When the theatre leaves the walls of theatre houses and takes to the street, it frequently does so not only to manifest its need to cross the boundaries of confined space, but also to disturb the harmony of places hitherto unexplored by art. To upset the structure of the street, to alarm passers-by, to attack the town and break its rhythm. KompleXKapharnaüm remain in contradiction to this pattern. It is a company open to the urban space. It assumes an inquiring attitude, and is ready for permanent dialogue with the town, which the group intend to tame. The town is not supposed to scare, but to become close to us. Getting familiar with the history of a place, we begin to see its human face.

Company KompleXKapharnaüM, which was established in 1995 in Villeurbanne near Marseille, represents the so-called reality-theatre. Their art combines theatrical elements with performance, circus acrobatics, video-art and varied veins of contemporary music (performed live). From the very beginning of the company’s existence, it has tried to address the spectator and the town through the agency of multimedia, and contrast the memory of a place with this of humans. The group’s art is a permanent game played along the borderline between the spectator and the actor, between public and artistic space, between palpable corporeality and indirect quality given the world by the camera lens. Calling themselves “archaeologists of the 21st century”, the artists examine our times and discover history in what is still alive: people and buildings. Here, a memory becomes a historical source. Very consciously relying on the category of “remembrance”, they introduce multimedia into their art. These, among other things, pose questions about image perceived as representation, which gives reality an indirect aspect.
