Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese needs no introduction. Every one of us has seen at least one of the brilliant productions by the great filmmaker: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980),  Kundun (1997), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Casino (1995), Gangs of New York (2002), Aviator (2004) or The Departed (2006).

Three elements appear to have shaped the character of Scorsese's work. Firstly, the artist was born and brought up in the Little Italy in Manhattan, i.e. he has experienced the emigrants' sad fate, and more than once had an opportunity to see the mafia "square the accounts". Secondly, when he started his film education, he had stayed in a seminary, which exerted profound influence upon the religious aspect of his work. Thirdly, he is a man who sees the surrounding contemporary reality in a conscious way, and who is very well aware of its negative sides. Such ingredients can only yield highly controversial art, even iconoclastic for some, art that is full of violence and touches taboo areas. Everything, however, has a purpose. By showing us the bare truth, the brutal reality of life, the director forces us to reflect on what path mankind has taken towards the so-called brighter future.
