Teatr ZAR

Zar is a polyphonic mourning song; its tradition, which goes back to the first centuries of Christianity, is cultivated by the Svans, an ethnic group in Georgia. ZAR is also a Wrocław-based theatre company, which took its origin in "Ewangelie dzieciństwa" ("Gospels of Childhood") project. Carried out in years 1999-2002, it involved trips to Georgia, Bulgaria and Greece, during which the artists got familiar with reconstructed religious, turgical songs. The ensemble's most vital experience was their stay in Svaneti and work with music of the Svans, who preserved traditional polyphonic songs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In October 2002, during celebrations to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ośrodek Praktyk Teatralnych "Gardzienice", the company presented the outcome of their journeys, an account of work on the performance of Ewangelie dzieciństwa. Later, together with butoh dancer Daisuke Yoshimoto, Teatr ZAR began work on Łazarz, a complementary project to Ewangelie Dzieciństwa-related artistic explorations.
