French street theatre companies make up a very important part of this year’s ‘Malta’. Their ways of expression and unconventional ideas turn the urban space into a unique venue, and change plain, grey passers-by into colourful spectators. They intimidate the swaggering, amuse the sad, provide entertainment to consumers, and deprive theatre lovers of the peace of mind (as well as give them a lot of satisfaction).

Well-known to festival audiences for their provocations and crazy escapades, the Marseilles-based company Générik Vapeur are going to seize the Old Marketplace. The troupe, which was formed in 1983, is one of the leading exponents of the "Art de Rue" vein, which draws inspiration from the changes triggered by the 1968 May events in Paris. Managed by Pierre Berthelot, this large company deals in numerous forms of art. Its members are also well-established authors of TV and multimedia programmes, films, installations and performances. The company’s actions are confrontations with the town, as well as challenges for the spectators. In their performances, the artists clearly indicate that they find the street the best medium to talk about social problems. The space of the town: its greens, back streets, squares, and buildings become the best venues in which to play and raise political, artistic, and human questions. Générik Vapeur try to come out to the society and speak its own voice, which becomes an attempt to unite with it in the medium of theatrical art. What matters to them is sharing experiences, emotions, fantasies with spectators; it is their mutual interaction, in which the man – the focal point and subject of art – becomes the key element.
