Out of Context - for Pina is Alain Platel's latest show. Stemming from the experience from vsprs and pitié! the show explores the introverted behaviours of modern people, filled with mental trauma and neuroses. The extensive body language is based on "the body in a state of hysteria". Hysteria (today referred to as conversion neurosis) is an extremely theatrical mental condition. Hysteric symptoms manifest in neurotic movements and gestures. In the 19th century it was considered a disease in its own right. Sigmund Freud, however, proved that the causes of hysteria were inorganic and that its symptoms concealed the underlying more general condition: anxiety, suffering, a sense of wrong or solitude. Today hysteric symptoms are manifested in a milder form and are treated as disorders of various organs.
The show does not focus on the condition itself, but rather on oversensitivity. Without the large-scale stage set and on-stage musicians that were typical of Platel's previous shows eight dancers explore their own and the viewers' fears and hopes. They study the body in a state of excitement and its response to being looked at by another person.
