Description

Isabella’s room is the first instalment of the trilogy Sad Face | Happy Face (with the subtitle Three Stories on Human Nature) which was developed over the course of five years. A blind elderly woman tells the story of her turbulent life which covers the major events of the 20th century. The stories relate to real-life events and the whole tale is embedded in Jan Lauwers' biography.
The second part of the trilogy, The Lobster Shop is reminiscent of a nightmare. The plot is set in the future and tells the tale of parents who have lost their son. The father plans to commit suicide. He puts on his best suit and goes to have his last dinner at a restaurant. When the waiter drops a lobster on his trousers, the ritual prepared so carefully by the father is shattered.
The third part, The Deer House, was inspired by the death of the brother of one of the dancers, a war correspondent in Kosovo. The show tells about the present in a world at war, as well as the present of a theatre show – the Needcompany during rehearsals. A group of theatre people must face the non-theatrical reality.
The whole trilogy is a reflection about our times which spans across different time settings.
