Living Dance Studio
Living Dance Studio, founded in 1994 by independent choreographer Wen Hui and documentary filmmaker Wu Wenguang, is the first independent dance/theatre company in China. Wen Hui graduated from the Beijing Dance Academy and then worked with the Oriental Dance&Song Company (officially supported by the Chinese Ministry of Culture). After a residency of several months in New York where she was introduced to modern and contemporary dance, she returned to China and created her own company. The Living Dance Studio productions combine dance, video and lighting design to disclose an image of private life in modern China. The company operates entirely outside the state-sponsored culture and entertainment system. Some of the artists they engage are freelance dancers whilst others work in state-owned theatres; their goal, nonetheless, is free expression and artistic experiments.
