Cao Fei (b. 1978) is a graduate of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China. Her works reflect the fluidity of the modern world in which culture is an unstable area seeking its own limits and undergoing constant and rapid evolution. Her video installations and new media works explore the processes of perception and various images of reality from places as diverse as factory halls to the virtual world of Second Life. The artist uses strategies taken from different aesthetics and conventions, for instance documentaries, role-playing games and sampling, to capture individual longings and imaginings. She explores the limits between dreams and reality reflecting upon the uncertainty and disillusion that accompanies the young Chinese in their everyday lives. Cao Fei’s works have been shown in some of the most internationally renowned galleries, including Tate Modern, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, and the Venice Biennale.
