Howard Pflanzer is a playwright, lyricist, poet and director. "On the Border", his recent play about the last night on earth of Walter Benjamin in 1940, had its world premiere at the Medicine Show Theatre in November 2007 where it was the winner of the 2007 Jump-Start new play competition. He was a collaborating writer for the 2008 surreal cabaretevening of "Pleasures of Peace", also at Medicine Show Theatre, adapting Louisa May Alcott's "Perilous Play". He was a Fulbright Scholar in theatre for the spring of 2003 in India where he directed the world premiere of his play "The Terrorist" at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. Heconducted theatre workshops, read from his playsand lectured at the Universities of Madras, Mumbaiand Pune and at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. He has an MFA from the Yale School of Drama in Playwriting and Dramatic Literature. He has received many prestigeous awards and prizes. His plays and musicals have been performed in the best cultural and artistic centres in the USA and abroad. His work has appeared in numerous literary journals and theatre publications. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Theatre and Speech at the City University of New York currently teaching at John Jay College.
American playwright Howard Pfl anzer will talk about his cooperation with the Medicine Show Theatre and The Living Theatre, as well as about the activity of The Wooster Group and The Ontological-Hysterical Theatre. He will present the process of developing and creating a theatrical play which is diff erent and unique for each and every theatre. He will also focus on political and cultural conditions that infl uenced their work. The lecture will be illustrated with excerpts of recordings of his workshops and spectacles.
