SutraSIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI
|Director:||Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui|
"A Japanese friend asked me 'what are the things you love' – and I was talking about yoga, singing and about martial arts. He had a contact with the monks of the Shaolin Temple and offered to introduce me." This is how Sidi Larbi, together with the sculptor Antony Gormley, an icon of modern art and author of massive installations, and the young Polish composer Szymon Brzóska, came to spend many months in a Shaolin temple working on the concept of a show. The dreamlike show, featuring monks, Zen disciples, focuses on the bond between an adult and an 11-year-old. Sutra combines yoga with Sufic trance, miming, the sign language, speech and spontaneous singing. Adorned with sophisticated stage and music settings the show is a specific treatise about the condition of mankind, about religious and sexual identity. It is a reflection on the clashing of cultures, on maturing and on fearing the moment when a child becomes independent. "My aesthetic, my sense of beauty," Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui said in an interview, "came from my childhood, which was a mixture of calligraphy and Flemish painters … So when I dance, I always think in terms of perspective, its always drawing …"
