Pizzas for the people

North Korea is one of the most culturally isolated countries in the world. Government-controlled media protect residents against the destructive and morally corrupting influences from the outside. The first ever North Korean pizzeria was not opened until 2009. The chefs were trained in Italy at the order of recently deceased leader Kim Jong-il who decided that the local residents, namely the political elite, should be familiar with the world’s most popular dish, the symbol of global pop culture. In response, South Korean artist Huang Kim arranged to smuggle into North Korea an instructional DVD for making pizza, packing a suitcase and going abroad, celebrating Christmas and being a pop trendsetter. The director intended for the film to be regarded as illegal propaganda that threatens the nation’s social stability. Pizzas for the People satirically explores how art can affect the social and cultural identity of its recipients and how it can deconstruct the ideological status quo.

To serve

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 2009. A recruitment centre trains women to become maids. Here they learn all the necessary practical skills, for instance good manners, the language of their prospective employers and how to use a microwave oven. Every month thousands of them leave Indonesia to find work in the Near East from where they will be able to send home a decent salary. But their work often turns out to be a nightmare. They are overworked and mentally oppressed whilst their role is usually reduced to that of a slave. Their stories, concealed behind domestic chores, can be detected in the look of their eyes, their words and laughter or, on the contrary, in their disturbing silence. The women depicted in the film talk about expectations – those they must satisfy, their own which have brought nothing but disappointment and those of their hopeful families which they have left thousands of miles away.
