Wanda Wasilewska Słuchowisko Azjatyckie

Incidentally, this year’s Malta Festival Poznań Idiom: Akcje Azjatyckie / Asian Investments, coincides with the Chinese Year of the Dragon. This snake-like creature with powerful claws symbolises a force that brings good fortune. When wishing someone good luck, polite Chinese say “may your child be born in the Year of the Dragon”. Incidentally, the author of this project was born in the Year of the Dragon and has now created a report aimed at recounting  a number of local Asian stories. These stories may not seem terribly spectacular and usually pass by unnoticed, but they may provide an opportunity to actually encounter Asia in Poznań. Wanda Wasilewska says about the Asian Report: “I will definitely not give you a recipe for sushi or stir-fired chicken. Neither will you learn what the Israeli Krav Maga self-defence system is about. In my report-like radio play I will let you meet people who you did not even know existed.

Miłobędzka / Zimpel Tyle tego Ty

Malta Festival Poznań 2012 has prepared an album of Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poems and music by Wacław Zimpel entitled Tyle tego Ty (So Much of It You) to celebrate the poet’s anniversary.

Wacław Zimpel confronted Krystyna Miłobędzka's texts and minimalism inspired by “Eastern sounds” - in particular the traditions of gagaku (Japanese court music) and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute).  Old musical traditions of Japan give preference not so much to melody and harmony, but to sound – that is one of the basic ways of shaping the composition's dramatic atmosphere. The meeting between Miłobędzka and Zimpel is exceptional for many reasons. The poet's voice and her authorial interpretation are treated here as the most important element. Music and sound are background. Still, Zimpel managed to artfully create his own story about Miłobędzka's poetry. He was able to find the space that does not strip her poems of clarity and transparency of form.

Dana Łukasińska Hibakusha

Hibakusha (literally meaning “people affected by explosion”) is a Japanese term used to denote victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dana Łukasińska’s mono-drama, based on the life of Robert Oppenheimer, the “father” of the atomic bomb, is, according to the author, “a multidimensional story about the power of creation and destruction, about the beauty of the human mind and responsibility for its works.” The play Hibakusha received a distinction in the contest Sztuka Monologu Laboratorium Dramatu (2010).

David Zane Mairowitz Kapitan Wspaniały powraca

Dawid Mairowitz’s radio play Kapitan Wspaniały powraca (Captain Marvel Returns) tells the story of an old man who, after several decades in the United States, returns  to his homeland and great granddaughter whom he does not really know. The thirty-year-old woman takes on the chore of caring for this complete stranger who remains silent and immersed in his own world. Several months later a box with his things arrives. To the woman’s surprise all it contains are old film reels which include an extensive collection of the series Adventures of Captain Marvel. The first actor cast in the role of this comic book superhero was a Lithuanian immigrant working in Hollywood. The radio play Kapitan Wspaniały powraca was inspired by this fact.

"It is so quiet. Outside leaves are rustling in the wind. Today my whole body is exclaiming: “I have climbed Śnieżnik Mountain!”. I close my eyes and see Poznań. It has not been a year and I still remember the people at the Festival Club: headsets and all, every now and then a twitch of the head or rhythms played with their fingers. “Wow, they are listening to the music I have prepared!” To play pieces in  a studio is one thing, but to play them through headsets and look at people anonymously is completely amazing. I am very happy that I will be able to have a go at this game with form and space again. I am tempted this time to choose music that makes it hard for people to sit still… My choice is rhythm, the universal element which, regardless of genre, affects the body and steals into the subconscious. It would be a novel experience to see people who despite sit-ting at the Festival Club with headsets are, in fact, dancing as their heads, legs and arms have been stolen away by… Can I do this? I do not know. I will try!"
